No, not becoming a temp-monkey, just the fan on my gpu has
done it's life work it seems... it sounds trRRRRRrrrrrrRRRRRrrrRRRrrRR
if I don't take the fanspeed below 10 percent.... and that's why
I monitor the temp on my panel.

I am not an idiot a'la "zomfgroflcopter9000, ITS OVER 60 DEGREEEESSSS!!!!111"
but simply need to know if it get's over 100 degrees ;-)

I can already hear the "a new gfx card is what? 20 bucks..."
I'm well aware, but u are prolly not aware of my laziness...
...I run my system on a 80gb IDE disk since I really like my
install (of many many years now) and don't feel like installing
a new system.

whats that? long description containing no valuable info whatsoever?
Yup, that's exactly what it is.

Can't you just clone your drive on to a new hd. I have done this using the tools on hirens cd.(torrent)
You can use a third party gpu cooler or/and pci exhaust above graphics card. I usually dremel out
the grills in the box and add a fan grill as the holes are to small to let out hot air. This will create better
air flow, took my temps down 20 c :)

Yeah I know hirens... used that a lot
at a place I used to work :)

Yeah I know I could change the fan and
do a lot of other cool jiggerypokery,
it's just, I don't wanna spend any more
money on this computer, it will run it's
course and then it's in with new stuff :)

Thx for the suggestion tho, I'm not
sure if you can just simply clone over
the install into a new disk. You are
sure you have copied ('cloned') a
working install into another disk that
is not exactly the same size or
anything? well, it's worth a try at
least when I get around to doing some
updates :)

I used acronis disk director, but it was a while back ext3 days. It asks how you want to redistribute extra space. I cloned 60gb to 500gb.

Well i guess that while winter is coming, you can keep warm the house thanks of the GPU (bad joke, Hombre deserves to die for this!)

I'm not sure but I *think* you mean coverflow [link] .

I didn't write that class, hell, the code for
that class is hebrew to me :D It's based on
ariyas work [link] just that one can
easily set a model to it. It's rather buggy
tho and one reason why I won't release the
file browser publicly. So the class I used
is this: [link]

it can be compiled standalone also and used
with a folder parameter. As you can see if
you scroll down.

Hehe, yeah, the computer serves as a battery
here indeed :D

Damn, i hate when i can't remember names!

It looks interesting, i've downloaded
PictureFlow and i'm using it standalone.

At least you have a deeper knowledge
of code...To me it's braille! ^^;

Bookmarked the link to the class,
i'm still hoping one day i'll be able to
understand this kind of things better.

well, the whole thing is implemented
in a obsolete way. It should be implemented
using hw acceleration (opengl). Not
software rendering. In the old days
it was safer (since not all hw supported
hw acceleration) but nowadays when gfx
cards are fast as f**k there is no
reason to have it software. That widget
doesn't even antialias so I prolly have
to write a new widget like that myself
based on QGraphicsView or smth.... but
right now I really don't care for anything
like that so sometime in the future.

will ( since everything else sucks more ).

I'm just one guy experimenting, the code
quality is very poor and I haven't even
intended on making it good enough for
public use. Sry but I doubt if that will
ever happen.

I'm not even sure what all stuff you

Glad you like my work, actually, when
it comes to designing, you usually don't
have to speak code, you just have to
speak gimp/photoshop. Qt apps are
stylable with qss (qt css implementation)
so you can basically style any qt
app with qss (meaning you can use
gfx made with gimp). This should
enable u to create some extreme
style for whatever app u want.
some docs: [link] [link]
In the second link if you scroll
down you'll have examples on how
to easily style buttons/tabbars
and whatnot.

btw. could you tell me how to display temperature of cpu/gpu/hdd in panel? I have always probs with my temperatures because of my tooOOooOOoo small towerly and tOoooOOOoo high tdp values of components. This is really helpful. :nod:

Thx, well... there has to be sensors for that
kind of stuff, so you have to get something
that outputs the temp.... putting it in a panel
is the easy part.

if you already have the temp info then just
write a script that 'prints' the info and
add a 'label' to the panel.

[GPU]
Exec=/home/bobby/doc/gpu
Lines=1
PollInterval=1000
Type=Label

the script file (or any other executable)
has to be executable (chmod +x).

read the docs: [link]
just scroll down to Type=Label

Thanks for the informations Robert! As a label was also my thought
but I have now idea how to write a script for it. You could share your
script as example. ;)
Reply
:iconth3r0b:
Th3R0b Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2012
well.... sure, but my example wont prolly help you
much... I'm no script kiddy myself, and my script
only works on nvidia cards.....

so basically the script is this:

#!/bin/bash

STR=`nvidia-settings -q [thermalsensor:0]/ThermalSensorReading | sed -n '/Attribute/p' | awk '{ print $4 }' | sed -e 's/\.//g'`
echo 'GPU temp: ' $STR ' C'

try issuing this cmd first and see what you
get:
$ nvidia-settings -q [thermalsensor:0]/ThermalSensorReading

the script just runs the output of that cmd
through sed/awk (there is by far a better
way to do this) so we only get the number
(temp) we are interested in. Then we print
(echo) some other faggish text to make it
look 'cool' on the panel... a simple number
is all the info you need since _U_ know what
it means but it doesn't look much.

to get some useful thermal info setup lm_sensors
and run:
$ sensors-detect
then start the service:
$ /etc/init.d/lm_sensors start
then run:
$ sensors
and see what you get.

then just learn sed [link]
and clean up the output with a nice bash
script and add a label to ur panel.

Thank you very much Robert!
You're not a script kiddy is good. If I ever have
a look in a script grabs me the naked fear. :lol:

Johannes (Hombremaledicto) told me that Thomas has
also loaded up a script, maybe I can use something from both. :)

Wish you a nice evening my friend!

Th3R0b Featured By Owner Dec 5, 2012
well, for this stuff ( extracting useful
info from the output of '$ sensors' ) you
don't really have to know much. For cpu
temp for example:

#!/bin/bash

CPU=`sensors | sed -n '/temp1/p' | awk '{ print $2 }'`
echo 'CPU temp is: ' $CPU

that's it... or one way to do it...
what do we do here?
Well, first we run (pipe) the output of
sensors trough sed and tell sed we are
only interested in the line that includes
'temp1' (cpu temp).
So now we only have that line as the output,
for me:
temp1: +52.0C (high = +100.0C, hyst = +96.0C)
then we run (pipe) that trough awk and tell
awk we are interested in the second column
which is '+52.0C' for me.

Then we just put that in a variable called
CPU, then we just output with echo...
...that line is so obvious I guess you can
figure that out by yourself.

Ofc you feel that way about any kind of code
since you cannot interpret it. If you only
had a quick look at the link I gave you
you could easily make beautiful labels
on your panels using sed/awk.

just start by issuing commands in the
terminal and pipe them trough sed/awk.

u2 man

Thanks again! GPU+CPU temp works. (in idle cpu= 52 and gpu= 58 and on full load cpu=74 and gpu not tested but I think much higher because of passive cooler).. I have to install a second fan... someway. :lol:

actually, gpu's can take quite some
heat, Ifffff you notice the temp
getting closer to 100 degrees (celsius)
then I'd worry but before that,
don't worry.
